A Self Storage Schedule and Options for Your Move

02/28/09

We all have had times when we owned more possessions than we had space for. And when this takes place, self storage units can really help out, particularly if you are moving. Even though self storage makes moving simple, however, there is some planning involved in making your move go smoothly. Like the idea of not wanting to pull your hair out the day you move? Take a look at the following self storage schedule.

One to Two Months Ahead

A month or two before you move, you will want to start taking a look at your things. There are always some possessions that you do not want to keep at all; now is the time to find new homes for them. With plenty of time to spare, plan a moving sale to help free up space in your self storage unit. Set aside some time to organize everything you own... and find a new home for anything you do not need to keep. You do not want unnecessary items filling up the limited space in your self storage unit.

Two Weeks Ahead

About two weeks before moving day, the things you own should be sorted and, if necessary, sold. Now it is time to get your paperwork organized. Your first chore will be contracting both a moving company, and a self storage company if necessary. For shorter moves, you can contract both at once by using a portable self storage company, which will both move and store your belongings. With portable self storage, you can also arrange for the unit further ahead of your move.

When looking at self storage companies, be sure to do your research carefully and choose the best one for you. When you flip through the Yellow Pages, you are sure to find hundreds of companies that might work for you. Look over their policies to be sure they offer the appropriate combination of security, insurance, climate control, etc., for your possessions.

One Week Before and Up to Moving Day

This close to the move, the paperwork should be taken care of, and your belongings should be sorted. Now you need to organize and load them. If you have decided to use portable self storage, you can load any items as they are packed in the order most convenient for you. If, on the other hand, you have decided on regular movers and traditional self storage, it is a good idea to reserve a place in your home to temporarily store items for self storage.

With portable self storage, moving day should be simple. You just place a phone call, put your family in the car, and drive to your new home. If using traditional moving or storage methods, however, be sure to leave plenty of time to load, unload, and organize. Because you're going to need it.
